What should we wear for our engagement session?

Have you been spending hours trying to find an outfit for your upcoming engagement session? As if you don’t already have enough going on planning a wedding, now you have to think about outfits for photos that you’ll likely use for save-the-dates, your wedding website, and hang in your house to cherish forever... the stress! Not to worry, you’re not alone and we’re here to help.

We’ve compiled our top 7 tips for what to wear for your engagement photos:

1. Wear clothes that make you feel like you!

This might seem like common sense, but the most important thing is to wear clothes that make you feel confident and like yourself. This is not the time to try a new look, or dress outside of your comfort zone. Keep your outfits simple; you should feel like your best version of yourselves.

2. Complement your partner, but don’t get matchy, matchy.

Gone are the days of matching outfits, the goal here is to not over-coordinate but look cohesive. Look for complementary colors and solid prints, try to stay away from anything with a busy pattern or too bold of a statement color (unless that is your everyday style).

3. Opt for timeless styles over trendy looks.

Have you ever looked back at photos of yourself from even a few years ago and thought “what the heck am I wearing”? You are your partner are going to have these photos to look at and cherish for years to come, and we’d hate to have you shaking your head at your wardrobe choices. Try opting for more classic styles over anything that might be trendy in the moment.

4. Bring a second outfit.

We typically recommend a total of two outfits for your engagement session, one that’s a little dressier (whatever dressy means to you) and a more casual outfit to get a variety of photos. We love to highlight our couples in ways that show who they truly are, style included.

5. Keep things fitted.

Having clothes that are properly tailored is a must, especially when it comes to how you look in front of the camera. Opt for clothes that flatter your nature body shape without feeling too tight.

6. Dress for the season.

Jackets in summer and flip flops in winter, no thank you! Take full advantage of the season that you’re in by styling your outfits to compliment the weather and location for your session.

7. Don’t forget some accessories!

Once you’ve found your perfect outfits, don’t forget to incorporate a few accessories. It’s important to not get too carried away with distracting statement pieces but adding a sentimental necklace or a family heirloom watch will add some visual interest to your photos, and help make them even more special.
